Business opportunity: According to Pacific Gas and Electric Company, more than $2 billion is spent for the electricity consumed by office equipment each year. Purchasers often fail to account for energy costs when buying office equipment, even though energy-efficient equipment with comparable features and performance is available for the same price. A strategic approach to energy management can produce savings to your organization.

Sustainability opportunity: Switching to ENERGY STAR office equipment reduces the amount of carbon dioxde released in the products lifetime. In addiditon, better equipment will also a reduce manufacturing toxic chemicals, and improved indoor office air quality.

Strategy Build & Execution

(1) Conduct assessment to search for opportunities to reduce energy costs.
(2) Evaluate the relationship with your suppliers to determine which strategy would be more suitable (such as energy teams is more hands on, while energy management systems is more of a supervisor role. Both are effective it just depends on the relationship.)
(3) Align with your suppliers to ensure they are on board with the selected program/strategy.
(4) Implement the selected program with the help of your suppliers.
(5) Contact the Energy Star for any further assistance with the process implementation.
(6) Align with stakeholders to ensure that awareness of changes being made and it being an initiative or a part of goal being pursued.
(7) Based on data, make an informed decision to procure better office equipment and diversify your suppliers.
(8) Ensure that quality is maintained and tracked.

Supplier Negotiation & Contract

(1) Negotiate with existing/potential suppliers on the value adding elements such as: shipping and handling, installation, and disposal of end-of-life supplies.
(2) Establish in contract the various supplier performance measures which would be tracked.
(3) When building the RFQ: the criteria for qualified products must deliver the features and performance stated in ENERGY STAR quidelines, in addition to increased energy efficiency.
(4) In contarct make it a pioroty to seek out office equipment with ENERGY STAR labeling.

In contract, request suppliers to apply for ENERGY STAR certification, or ensure that they follow guidelines as mentioned in the production process of the products. This gives them the opportunity to have more leverage with other clients and provide you discounts for the initiative.

Supplier Performance & Management

Regularly follow up with the suppliers of their energy efficient products and ensure that they follow the ENERGY STAR guidelines.

Integrate the reporting of CO2 emission reductions into the annual supplier performance management.

Schedule meetings accordingly with stakeholders to group align on the energy efficiency goals.
