Category Assessment

Heading 4

(1) Inquire about the current energy-saving initiatives that your paper suppliers have in place.
(2) Conduct research to investigate the various strategies outlined in section 6 of this guide and make judgments of which strategy would work best based on your relationship with the supplier (such as strategic energy management program etc.)

This assessment step is crucial as your company needs to know where your suppliers stand in terms of energy consumption. For example: in 2002, the pulp and paper industry consumed over 2,200 trillion British thermal units (TBtu) of energy, which accounted for around 14% of all the fuel consumed by the U.S. manufacturing sector.

Heading 4

By saving energy, the supplier is also saving on the costs associated with energy. The recommended strategies in the document have the potential for increased connectivity with the supplier's operations, potentially fostering a stronger relationship with them. Energy prices are very volatile, so by reducing energy usage, there is improved price stability.

There is a high degree of greenhouse gas emissions associated with the high energy outputs of current paper production processes. By reducing energy usage, emissions also get reduced.

(3) Align with your suppliers to ensure they are on board with the selected program/strategy.
(4) Implement the selected program with the help of your suppliers.
(5) Contact Energy Star for any further assistance with the process implementation.
