Assessment

Q

Heading 4

(1) Conduct an internal assessment of how computers are currently being disposed off.
(2)Assess the viability of a program where suppliers takeback products and use materials from those products in their new products through scrapping processes.
(3) Do market research on other computer suppliers that have this type of program
(4) Assess the commercial and environmental benefits of helping the supplier implement this program vs. transferring to another supplier that already does this.

Opportunity

Heading 4

Business:
Cost savings on waste management practices and provides the opportunity to reduce costs with suppliers

Sustainability:
Prevention of hazardous waste from entering the landfill. Recycling computer parts appropriately can significantly reduce landfill waste and hence reduce carbon footprint.

Strategy Build & Execution

Heading 4

(1) Conduct the steps in assessment to see if there is an opportunity for more products to be recycled.
(2) Evaluate the potential commercial benefits associated with the recycling end-product.
(3) Align with suppliers on the potential for implementation of a takeback or exchange program.
(4) If suppliers lack the resources to implement this program, look at the assessment of other suppliers and do an assessment of whether a switch can be made to another supplier
(5)If they are willing to add this program, Align with suppliers on the implementation of the recycling program. Describe the commercial and social benefits.
(6) implement a company policy to ensure that employees are following the necessary procedures for recycling their computers.
(7) Implement training programs instructing employees of these necessary procedures

Supplier Negotiation & Contract

Heading 4

In contracts, require vendors to provide take-back services using providers certified under the R2 or E-Stewards Standards (or non-US equivalent program); http://e-stewards.org/special-programs/

(1) Work out with suppliers how much recycled material they can use in their production and quantify that in the contract for the recycling program.

Supplier Performance & Management

Heading 4

Perform annual Supplier Relationship Review and are required for sustainability reporting in annual reviews.
Maintain records of turnaround time, recycling performance reports, purchasing and warehousing cost, average inventory level, and inventory variations.
Perform an internal review after the program has been implemented to evaluate the commercial impact of large-scale computer recycling, and environmental impact; compare to historical data.
