12. Ensure Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns

Recycle construction waste (On site separation practices)

SDG Alignment

Target Description

Level of Effort

UN SDG Target

By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse

Category Assessment

Heading 4

(1) Assess the current recycling practices followed.
(2) Evaluate all materials used in construction and classify them in different categories (recyclable and non-recyclable).
(3) Calculate the current spend on the waste management process.
(4) Align with suppliers to allocate a specific sum towards implementing an on-site separation and recycling initiative that is beneficial for both parties.
(5) Contact and request assistance from local construction recycling services available.

Heading 4

Reduce on-site material hauling and disposal costs by working with recyclers to accept materials (for a lower charge) that can be recycled. Scope to build brand image.

High energy savings from decreased consumption of natural resources and reduced waste materials sent to landfills.

Strategy Build & Execution

Heading 4

(1) Align stakeholders with the goals, targets, and benefits of an on-site materials recycling program (can be done through short training programs).
(2) Develop into the on-site separation program to classify the materials based on their recyclability (initial training and efforts to be provided).
(3) Align with suppliers to procure better quality materials to reduce rejects due to defects which add to the waste material pile.
(4) Collect and dispose of materials at the nearest construction recycling center identified.

Supplier Negotiation & Contract

Heading 4

(1) Training to be included in the contract and have clear expectations that all contractors should enroll in a training program for on-site separation practices.
(2) Leverage during negotiations with other construction companies to develop such a trial program to build their sustainability, offering portfolio and cost savings to other clients and their market.
(3) Leverage your business's experience to implement a materials recycling program for the contractor into the contract with them.

Supplier Performance & Management

Heading 4

Regular follow up on training certifications to ensure being used by all contractors.

Monthly reporting system to outline and track the number of materials recycled.

Half-yearly meetings to discuss new technologies that complement the JIT program and make it more efficient.

Regular quarterly meetings to discuss the JIT system implementation in general and feedback from each team on improvement areas.
