1. Raw material - air and water pollution associated with raw materials extracted which are used in equipment. Identify if you have any policies in place to the source with minimal impact on the environment.

2. Product manufacturing –greenhouse gas emissions, air and water pollution, and the production of hazardous waste. Does your manufacturer have emission reduction initiatives?

3. End of life – e-waste generation, including leaching of hazardous substances and reduced air and water quality from incineration. Understand how your waste is being processed.

Improving worker health and safety during the raw material extraction, product manufacturing, and disposal stages, from reduced exposure to hazardous chemicals and substances.

Sustainability:
Minimize the impact on the environment and health safety concerns as a result of exposure to toxic chemicals.

Strategy Build & Execution

1. Establish goals and targets that you see fit for your company and the potential commercial benefits associated with a sustainable initiative

2. Work with your suppliers and identify if a recycling option exists for your end product

3. Ask the supplier for a toxic minerals report of current/prospective mobile phones

4. If toxic chemicals are present, evaluate sourcing other options that fit requirements set out by engineering without lead, halogens, or other toxic chemicals.

5. Create a proposal for procedure change on decision criteria for purchasing phones that includes toxic chemicals as a consideration or limitation

6. Get alignment with your engineering team, and other stakeholders/decision-makers.

Supplier Negotiation & Contract

1. During contracts preparation, ensure to require vendors to provide take-back services using providers certified under the R2 or E-Stewards Standards (or non-US equivalent program), see the links in resources for more detail

2. Encourage vendors and manufacturers to engage in key initiatives to address supply chain impacts (see links in resources for more information regarding the following), such as initiative for
a) Responsible Mining Assurance and
b) Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative.

3.Training; including IT/technology staff representatives, procurement officer personnel, the chief information officer (CIO), and initial product testers.

Supplier Performance & Management

1. Integrate annual checks for conflict mineral reporting, compliance with warranty/quality assurance clauses.

2. Establish internal and external reporting on the specific product being purchased is compliant at the point of sale; confirm manufacturers' compliance with standards.
